Ditching PostHog for Cloudflare Web Analytics

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I was exploring the PostHog analytics platform. It’s a huge product, offering a ton of features for analyzing not just web traffic but also the product itself, built-in feature toggles, and A/B testing.

But honestly, for a small site with purely personal content… it’s overkill. Well, I kind of knew it was going to be overkill, and I just confirmed that to myself. First, all I used was the Web Analytics.

Compare that with Cloudflare Web Analytics (included in the free tier):

You basically get the same data. Yes, session duration and bounce rate are nice metrics, but I don’t need them — not until I get some reasonable number of active readers. And given that’s not a primary goal of this site, it’s probably not going to change in the near future.

Lesson learned? Exploring is fine. I’m really glad I tried PostHog, and I’m sure I’ll use it in the future in some more well-suited scenario. But as always, don’t overengineer simple things. Having analytics right in Cloudflare is so much easier for me, and I get all the data I need.
